My Hawaiian Delight
The Good and the Beautiful
There are plenty of things to see, do and appreciate on the Big Island of Hawaii. I love the diversity and the small island feel. even in the two visits I have already made to the island, I have not explored all those things still on my list.
In just a short six years, there have been some new developments on the Big Island that I was saddened to see. One is the emergence of 'villages'. These villages are actually homes, villas and condos that have sprung up in otherwise desolate areas. These villages are self contained with gas stations, little shops and the big draw-golf courses.
Where once used to be great spans of black lava flows covered in prairie grasses, are now these oases of greenery and life. While that may sound great on the outside, what has happened is that the weather on the island has now changed (yes, just like in Arizona). Because of the influx of more greenery and watering, the weather on the island is now nearly as muggy as it is here in Florida.
In fact, I ran into a store owner who was originally from Florida and asked her about the climate change in Hawaii. She agreed. She blamed the change in weather first on the drought and then on the floods that Hawaii has had in the last three years. The temperature is so much like her old home, that she said she was selling her shop the following month and moving back to Florida. "We have beaches just as nice as here and it's a lot cheaper to live in Florida," she said.
